Energy Management

In 2024, 97.26% of the process energy of steelmaking, steel rolling and other products in Tang Eng is purchased electricity, and the rest of the electricity is provided by solar electric field, as well as natural gas, steam, oxygen, argon and nitrogen. In 2024, the total power consumption of the process was 116.15 million kWh (including renewable energy such as solar energy), with about 15.9867 million cubic feet of natural gas and 28,730 tons of steam. The unit energy consumption per ton of steel coil production index decreased slightly, and electricity intensity was 622.41 kWh/metric ton, a decrease of approximately 13.896% compared to 2023, while the energy intensity of other natural gas and steam decreased by 3.24% and by 2.27% respectively. The electricity consumption of steel coil is directly related to the production capacity and production schedule. Tang Eng Company continues to strive for energy-saving space, hoping to continuously show its effectiveness.

Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction Measures and Results

Tang Eng Company is committed to pursuing the control measures with high efficiency, high output value, low emission and low consumption, so as to achieve the green effect of saving energy and effectively reducing environmental load. From 2015 to 2024, in coordination with the "Energy Saving Target and Implementation Plan" formulated by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the average annual energy saving rate should reach more than 1% since the implementation of the plan. The "Demand Response Load Management Measures" and related energy-saving measures (Including recognition for 2023) implemented by Tang Eng Company in 2024 reduced the electricity consumption by about 14,860,280 kWh/year; The 3000KW solar energy field with an investment of NT$ 135 million was also built in July 2023 and connected to the grid. By the end of 2024, the solar energy field generated a total of 3,179,700 kWh of green electricity, which was used by itself to reduce the power purchased. In 2024, the overall energy-saving rate was 11.34%, and the average energy-saving rate from 2015 to 2024 was 6.42%, which reached the "Energy users set energy-saving targets and implementation plans" set by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In 2024, process electricity consumption totaled 116.15 million kWh (including solar and other renewable energy). Natural gas usage was approximately 15.9867 million cubic feet, and steam was about 28,730 metric tons. The unit energy consumption indicator for electricity per ton of steel coil production slightly decreased, with electricity intensity at 622.41 kWh/metric ton, a drop of approximately 13.896% compared to 2023. Other energy intensities, such as natural gas and steam, decreased by 3.24% and 2.27% respectively. As steel coil electricity consumption is directly related to capacity and production scheduling, Tang Eng Company continues to diligently seek further energy-saving opportunities, hoping to continuously demonstrate effective results.

In 2024, six energy-saving projects were completed: "Pump Renewal," "Steelmaking HVAC Water System Piping and Management Improvement," "Steelmaking Cooling Water Electrical Control System Upgrade to Variable Frequency Control," "Steelmaking Water Treatment Electrical Control System Upgrade," "Tang Eng Company Rolling Mill Plant Lighting Renewal," and "Rolling Mill Building 2F Central Air Conditioning System Renewal." Specifically: "Pump Renewal" involved replacing old pumps to increase their efficiency to over 74%. "Steelmaking HVAC Water System Piping and Management Improvement" involved piping modifications and management improvements, allowing for the shutdown of one 60HP pump operating 360 days a year, thereby increasing the utilization rate of HVAC water pumps. "Steelmaking Cooling Water Electrical Control System Upgrade to Variable Frequency Control" and "Steelmaking Water Treatment Electrical Control System Upgrade" involved adding variable frequency control to pump electrical control systems, allowing for real-time adjustment of water pressure and consumption based on on-site load changes. "Tang Eng Company Rolling Mill Plant Lighting Renewal" replaced 83 traditional high-wattage light fixtures with high-efficiency LED lights. "Rolling Mill Building 2F Central Air Conditioning System Renewal" involved replacing old equipment to improve overall efficiency. The total investment for these six equipment updates and improvements was NT$19.95 million, resulting in an annual saving of 2,111,114.22 kWh of electricity and a reduction of 1,042.89 metric tons of CO2e in greenhouse gas emissions.

Water Resources Management

Sources of water used

Tang Eng Company's operating location is Siaogang District, Kaohsiung City. According to the World Resources Institute's "Water Risk Assessment Tool," the water stress in this area is shown as "Low - Medium risk (1-2)."

The water source of Tang Eng Company comes from Fengshan Reservoir in Kaohsiung. The daily industrial water supply of Fengshan Reservoir is 300,000 tons. In 2024, the total water intake of Tang Eng Company is 720,940 tons, and the average daily raw water intake is 1,975.19 tons, which is about 40.35% higher than that of 2023. Although water demand increased due to higher production capacity, it still only accounts for only 0.658% of Fengshan Reservoir's water output, which is far lower than Fengshan Reservoir's industrial water supply. We applied to the water supply company for approval. Therefore, there is no significant impact on the water source due to water intake.

In 2024, the average daily water discharge is 1,519 tons, and the daily average water consumption is about 479.47 tons due to the rolling and steelmaking process, sprinkler equipment and cooling water tower cooling, evaporation and splashing, and the daily water consumption in the rolling mill area is 260.32 tons, while that in the steelmaking plant area is 219.15 tons.

Fengshan Reservoir is an important national wetland reserve. According to the survey of the Kaohsiung Bird Association, this reserve is the habitat of cormorants, ospreys, Taiwan thrushes, green-winged doves, red-tailed shrikes, lesser white-fronted geese, and yellow-necked black herons. There are as many as 3,000 migratory birds, and it is an important habitat for them. The production plant of Tang Eng Company is located in the Linhai Industrial Park, which has no impact on water sources.

Measures and effectiveness for water saving

The iron and steel industry is one of the industries with high water consumption. In order to effectively use water resources, Tang Eng Company has formulated water-saving strategies and set up water-saving facilities, such as improving system design, adopting high-efficiency equipment, recycling, etc. And through formulating water balance, as shown in the figure, adding flow meters to strengthen management and control, improving the manufacturing process to reduce water intensity, reducing discharge of runoff water, and reducing the Company's dependence on raw water during dry seasons, achieving remarkable results in saving water resources. Taking the cooling water of steel rolling and steelmaking process as an example, a repeating circulation scheme is adopted, which will discharge the cooling wastewater through precipitation, sit still and then be filtered and recycled to the cooling circulating water process. The conductivity of the cooling water is regularly tested to reduce the discharge of cooling water.

In 2024, Tang Eng Company continued to promote water-saving strategies, saving a total of 308,500 tons of water and recycling 177,000 tons of water for reuse throughout the year. The estimated overall plant water recovery rate was 81.66%. The company’s total water consumption in 2023 was 513.660 thousand tons, and external verification of the water recovery rate was completed in November 2024, with a verified recovery rate of 87.51%. The total water consumption in 2024 was 720.945 thousand tons, and external verification of the water recovery rate is expected to be completed by the end of September 2025. The external verification unit for the water recovery rate in 2023 and 2024 was the “Metal Industries Research & Development Centre.”
